Drywall repair is often treated like a contained task because the damaged spot may be only a few inches wide. The working area is not. For a larger cutout, water damage repair, or drywall replacement, treat the floor like it is part of the jobsite. Cover the immediate work area before demolition begins, then expand protection along the path where debris will be carried out. Hard debris can gouge flooring long before the finishing stage starts. Plastic barriers may still be useful for isolating a room during extensive sanding, but they are not a substitute for a stable floor barrier at the wall.

Also consider the condition of the floor before selecting materials. Freshly finished floors, delicate coatings, and some specialty surfaces may not be good candidates for adhesive tape. In those situations, tape-free placement is a practical advantage. You get coverage without creating a second problem during removal.
